In the People’s Republic of China the automobile industry since 2008 has been the largest in the world. Since early 1990s China’s automobile industry has been in speedy development. China had produced 13.79 million automobiles in 2009, 8 million of this were passenger cars like sedans, sport utility vehicles (SUV), multi- purpose (MPV) and crossovers; 3.41 million for commercial vehicles like buses, trucks, and tractors. 44.3% of the automobiles that were produced are local brands like BYD, Lifan, Chan’an (Chana), Geely, Cheryl, Hafei, Jianghuai (JAC), Great Wall, Roewe and etc; and the rest that are being produced by at one ventures with foreign cars that made Volkswagen, Mitsubishi, General Motors, Hyundai, Nissan, Honda, Toyota, and etc. Cars that are almost manufactured in China are sold in China and in 2009 about 369,000 cars are being exported. In was in 1992 that the annual automobile production capacity in China first exceeded one million. And by 2000, they were producing over two million automobiles. The development of the automobile market increases more in 2001 after they join the World Trade Organization (WTO). Around 2002 and 2007, there market increases by an average of 21 percent or in a year around one million vehicles. The production of automobile in China increases six million then to seven million and over eight million automobile were produced in 2007. Motor vehicles were manufactured in China in 2009 outranking United States for being the largest automobile producer by volume. And in 2010 both production and sales topped 18 million units, where in 13.76 million passenger cars were delivered that made the nation in history.

China overtook Japan as the world’s second largest auto consumer next to the United States in 2006 with a sale increasing 25.1% every year to 7.2 million units. And exceed Germany to become the third largest auto maker next to United States and Japan with an automobile production increasing every year to 27.6% to 7.3 million units. With the auto shows made in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou are drawing a lot of attention. The Beijing Auto show is now a major or main industry event. In April 2010 at the Beijing Motor Show it has more than 2,100 automakers and auto parts companies from 16 countries that joined. A total of 990 vehicles were displayed that also include 89 debut cars. Because of the show it attracted more than 100 Chinese and foreign automakers.

Because of the fast growing economy of China, the dispose income of their citizens has remain an upward trend for years that contribute to the increasing number of people having their own private automobile. China is encouraging the automakers to develop automobiles that are environmentally friendly and low energy consumption vehicles to maintain a sustainable economic development. And now there are more manufacturing automobile companies that are joining the league to develop and make hybrid cars with lower battery cost and a higher capacity. It is also expected that as the incomes increases in China the high annual growth rate of private ownership is also expected to increase. Some analyst predict that China has so much investment money that is going into automobile industry that could have a capacity to make over 31 million vehicles a year by 2015 that could make a serious overcapacity of automobiles and inability of infrastructure to keep pace.
